Florida Keys Kayaking

The Florida Keys are an archipelago made up of 1700 islands that run from Miami to Key West in Florida. The area is tropical with shallow waters and the Upper Keys are coral reefs that have fossilized as sea level declined. The natural scenery there includes tons of different aquatic life and flora. The coconut palm, hibiscus, papaya, and key lime grow wild.

Kayaking in the Florida Keys is a popular pastime. It has been combined with fishing, snorkeling, Kayaks are small, human-powered boats with slightly pointed ends and a covered deck. There can be one or two cockpits with paddlers using a double-bladed paddle. The cockpit has a spraydeck, commonly known as a skirt, to keep the inside of the kayak and the bottom half of the paddler dry. The paddler sits facing forward with legs out front. The longer a kayak is, the faster it is. Some kayaks have been modified and have removed the cockpit and spraydeck.

Kayaks in the Florida Keys can sometimes come with sails and are outfitted for snorkeling and spear fishing. Kayak tours are popular in the area as the aquatic life is abundant of beauties and exotic animals. Because of the shallow clear waters, it’s easier for kayakers to see animals near or far away in the water. There are stingrays, sea urchins, sharks, birds, tortoises, and oodles of different types of fish. There are also plenty of coral around the area. If you go, you’ll probably see these and jellyfish, sea grass, crabs, manatees, finger coral, skates, eels, mangrove forests, sea fans, sea anemones, amberjacks, groupers, wahoos, tarpons, and barracudas.

When you go to the Florida Keys, make sure that you plan in advance. Summer may be overcrowded and swarming with bugs. Try going in winter when the weather is still warm and the bugs aren’t so overbearing. There also won’t be as many people and it’ll be easier to get a tour. Open kayaks are the best for beginners because they easily overturn. This makes it safer to use for those who are inexperienced. Kayakers who are more advanced and are seeking a longer trail usually choose fast hulls (which are longer) that have watertight bulkheads. This makes bringing food and camping gear easier. Kayakers should be out of the water by early afternoon. This is because of the currents. The currents become much stronger and head out to the Atlantic Ocean past the Keys.

Some routes will lead you right under the Seven Mile Bridge, toward Molasses Key, mangrove tunnels in Boot Key, Sombrero Beach on Marathon, and to Key Largo to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park to Key West. The type of excursion you want and your experience level will determine which route is best for your kayaking trip.

The Florida Keys are a popular spot for all sorts of activities, kayaking being just one of them. Kayaking in the Florida Keys is an unforgettable experience that will bring you closer to wild aquatic life than you’ve ever been

Make the Most of Your Vacation with Key Largo Snorkeling

Traveling shouldn’t be treated as the mere act of getting away, going out of town, or going somewhere far from your comfort zone or cage. Try treating traveling as an opportunity to learn new amazing things as you enjoy and relax the destination of your choice. Since you saved a lot of money for your vacation, don’t take it as time to simply waste money. In return, get something else aside from the relaxation. Relaxing is great, but why not reach out and do a little more, have a new experience.

Why not enjoy your vacation doing something adventurous with nature. There are so many choices you might consider like hiking, trekking, camping, scuba diving, snorkeling and other fun nature-tripping activities.

Snorkeling (hello Key Largo!) is increasingly becoming popular. This water-based activity is actually a very fun and easy activity, where you can appreciate the beauty of the world under the water. You can enjoy magnificent surroundings and scenery under the water that are not usually seen by most people.

One greatest advantage of snorkeling is that talent or skill is not a pre-requisite! Yes, it is true. You don’t have to be a professional diver or swimmer to appreciate a splendid marine sanctuary. You will be wearing a jacket anyway, so swimming skills is not really required, aside from the fact you will not essentially go to swim in the first place because you will be just snorkeling.

There is one place that I can recommend for you. This is at Key Largo. Just by searching in the internet, you will find out that many people were already amazed by their Key Largo Snorkeling and Diving experience.

The Key Largo is located the coasts of Florida, USA. It is actually the third biggest barrier reef around the world. By engaging in snorkeling for several days in Key Largo, you will definitely be moved by the only and remaining living coral reefs in the whole USA. Because of this situation, the place has been put into serious protection programs by several agencies, organizations and government. With these joint efforts for the preservation of the Florida Keys, you can only imagine the perfect marine paradise that you have dreaming of to visit long ago.

Well in fact, for four (4) decades now of vigorous preservation and protection of the Florida Keys, it is now an essential part of the most famous three (3) square nautical miles National Marine Sanctuary.

One of the sites that you can visit on your Key Largo snorkeling adventure are the famous bronze statue of Christ of the Abyss, which stands nine (9) feet tall from underwater. The top most part of the statue is almost reaching the water surface; hence, it is perfect for snorkelers and even divers. Moreover, you will be astonished by the coral reefs that surround the statue like flower in an ordinary grotto or garden with specialized landscape.

Another one is the Spiegel Grove, which is a 510-foot ship that sunk in 2002. If you like learning history in the extreme but fun way, you can dive down below to appreciate the Benwood Wreck, which is a British ship that sunk during the World War II.

Ready to give Florida Keys snorkeling a try? Key Largo is a great place to start.

The Dry Tortugas are a group of small islands otherwise known as keys off the end of the Florida Keys. The islands were first discovered by Spanish explorer Ponce de León in 1513. The Dry Tortugas earned its name from the lack of fresh surface water on the land and its abundance of sea turtles. The area is composed of seven islets: Loggerhead Key, Garden Key, Bush Key, Long Key, Hospital Key, Middle Key, and East Key.

The Loggerhead Key is where the Dry Tortugas lighthouse currently stands. Garden Key houses Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas Park. There is also a lighthouse but it is no longer in use. Hospital Key was named for the hospital that took care of the inmates of Fort Jefferson when it was a prison. Middle Key is sometimes often below sea level and can disappear for weeks or months on end. Bush Key was formerly known as Hog Island for the hogs that were raised as meat for the prisoners. It is now the home of a large tern rookery. Former islands include the Southwest Key, Bird Key, North Key, and Northeast Key. The islands are continuously changing in size and shape because of the weather and nature of the land.

The area also has two known shoals that used to have navigational lights. Pulaski Shoal, or Pulaski Reef, is where the Pulaski Shoal light once was. Iowa Rock, which is partway between Garden Key and Hospital Key, had a light but it was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo.

The Dry Tortugas are only accessible by boat or seaplane. Transportation services can be found with Yankee Freedom II, Sunny Days, Sailboat Charter, or Key West Seaplane Adventures. The islands are well-known for their abundance of bird species. With over 299 species of birds, including the Sooty Terns, Brown Noddy, Masked Booby, Magnificent Frigatebird, Brown Pelican, Roseate Tern, and Mourning Dove, the Dry Tortugas are a popular bird watching destination.

On Garden Key is Dry Tortugas Park. Dry Tortugas Park houses the unfinished Fort Jefferson, abandoned in 1874. Before then, it was used as a prison. The park is famous for its varied sea life, coral reefs, and shipwreck legends of buried treasure.

Fort Jefferson was designed to be a coastal impregnable fortress with heavy gun machinery and embrasures. It is the largest masonry structure this side of the globe and is made from over 16 million bricks.

Tourists come here often to enjoy the scenery and leisure activities like snorkeling, camping, saltwater fishing, bird watching, scuba diving, and picnicking. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the fort a National Monument on January 4, 1935 on his visit to the Dry Tortugas. The Dry Tortugas Park was shut down with many other national parks in 1995, but was not reopened until many Key West residents raised money to keep it open and protested.

The Dry Tortugas are a tropical and more isolated travel destination. Its quiet tourism keeps the islands a desired place of escape. With an abundance of wildlife, beaches, places to explore, and history to visit, the Dry Tortugas are the perfect destination for a unforgettable vacation.

While there are multiple bridges (over 42) in the Florida Keys, the actual bridge most people think of when they think of the Florida Keys is the actual Seven Mile Bridge, affectionately referred to as the “Florida Keys Bridge”.

The Seven Mile Bridge is now listed as a National Historic Site.

This Florida Keys bridge connects part of Marathon to part of the Lower Keys. This bridge is also part of the “Overseas Highway”.

The Seven Mile Bridge has over 400 spans and has been featured in many films such as “True Lies”. While most of the bridge is closer to the water, there’s a larger section for boats to pass under (65 feet).
